Body Text

Power Trail ‘E-STEM’ learning resource

As part of the Vision for Lanark Power Trail project, CMC Associates Ltd - in partnership with Lanark Community Development Trust, New Lanark World Heritage Site, The Scottish Wildlife Trust, SSE
Renewables and Drax – have developed an ‘E-STEM’ online learning resource package for teachers to use in the classroom and to support a self-led school visit to New Lanark and the Falls of Clyde.

What is Power Trail?
Power Trail follows the heritage story of hydro power at New Lanark and the Falls of Clyde. In following the trail, visitors discover how advances in technology have supported and generated centuries of sustainable, renewable energy within a spectacular environment. The trail covers three broad themes:

• Heritage: 250 years of water-powered technology at New Lanark, from waterwheels to electricity-generating turbines.
• Environment: The Scottish Wildlife Trust manages and monitors the nature reserve for the benefit of its biodiversity.
• Hydro-electricity: A 20th and 21st century story of hydro power at the site of one of the country’s first hydro-electric power stations for public supply.

Interpretive Power Trail
In late 2024, a series of 12x Power Trail interpretation panels were installed at New Lanark World Heritage Site, along the Falls of Clyde walkway, outside Bonnington Power Station and at the Corra Linn (lower) viewpoint. Visitors can also download a trail guide map, via a QR code to their phones, and follow the trail route.

E-STEM learning resource
The Power Trail E-STEM learning resource pack is a selection of resources for use as a teacher-led, whole class activity or an independent, student-led exercise at home or in the classroom. Self-led, cross-curricular content supports Third Level Es & Os within the Curriculum for Excellence for Sciences, Social Studies and Technologies, as well as some Es & Os at Fourth Level. The package also aims to support a self-led learning visit to New Lanark and the Falls of Clyde for your class to see key sites and technologies and follow the Power Trail route. The resource can also be used remotely for schools who cannot physically visit the site in person.

Powerpoint unit
The Powerpoint unit can be flexible and editable. It is possible for teachers to modify and personalise them to be useful and usable with your individual classes and learners.

All elements, such as texts and images, within the slides are locked initially, to avoid unintentional changes to the layout or accidental deletion. To unlock elements within Powerpoint, go to the top menu bar and select Arrange>Selection Pane. This lets you view and select individual elements on a slide, show or hide items, re-order them or lock / unlock for editing purposes. Double-click on an item to edit or rename it.
